My Story
Becoming a software engineer
2019 - now
While I’ve learned a ton at Medigo, I felt that something was missing and that I had a blind spot. I was curious about the work of our tech team but I had little chance to interact with them on a daily basis.
In 2019, I started learning to code and I’ve not looked back since. After learning some fundamentals of computer science while getting familiar with Python, I’ve decided to focus on web development, initially working with Django, before moving on to the JavaScript ecosystem.
Since mid-2020, I’ve been primarily working with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Next.js Node.js, Express, PostgreSQL and GraphQL.
I love learning about new technologies and have recently been exploring ML & AI for various use cases such as classification, summarization and transcription.
I’m very thankful for the amazing community resources I’ve had at my disposal, including online courses and tutorials, books, documentation, and very supportive (and generous with their time) developer friends.
I'm currently a Senior Software Engineer at On Deck, where I'm focused on building products for early stage startup founders.
Founding a startup
2013 - 2021
After graduating from university, I decided to move to Berlin to join its growing tech ecosystem. I worked briefly for a well-known angel investor, before founding Medigo, with a mission to improve access to quality healthcare globally.
We raised funds from some great angels and VCs (i.e. Atlantic Labs, Accel Partners), grew the team to 50+ full-time employees, and helped over 200,000 patients access high quality healthcare across 5 continents.
During those 7 years, as the COO and CCO, I've built up and managed a lot of functional areas that I’ve never dealt with before: operations, business development, marketing, finance, HR and legal. The life of a startup founder is challenging and the learning curve was incredibly steep but I can't imagine a better opportunity to compress a lifetime of experiences and insights into several years.
Studying abroad and online poker
2006 - 2013
I moved to Manchester (UK), where I started studying International Business. This took me for an exchange year to Hong Kong, and for my masters to Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Nanjing (China), and all across Asia in between. Those years helped me appreciate different cultures, perspectives and viewpoints.
During those 6 years, I’ve played online poker semi-profesionally. Studying and playing the game in a serious way taught me a lot about probability, game theory, decision making and managing your own psychology. Who would've guessed how useful these skills would become in the startup world.
Growing up in Poland
1987 - 2006
I was born and grew up in Szczecin (good luck pronouncing that), Poland. It was fun but after graduating from high school, I decided to explore a bit more. Rather than study in another city in Poland, I decided to move abroad.
